Cleft palate repair

Postby Andrea » Fri Jan 01, 1999 10:39 am

I am interested in any information regarding the recovery of
the child after surgery. My daughter will be having her palate
repaired in Feb. at 9mos of age. How did your child handle the
arm restrants? How did you handle feeding? How did your child
handle not being able to have a bottle? Any information would be
helpful!

My daughter had her palate repaired at 12 mo. and did really
well with the restraints. She got used to them and learned how to
play with her toys anyway. We were using the haberman feeder with
her and were still allowed to feed her with it using the flow
slit. I would recommend giving your child some pediasure after
the surgery for a couple of days to continue all the nurtriets
that your child will need. It worked well for us and kept her
full. Good luck.

My daughter had her cleft palate repair Jan 19th 2005. Before the surgery she ate with the haberman feeder and after her surgery she had to be fed with a syringe for 6 days. I was not prepared for it to be that long, but we worked it out. I have been having difficulty however getting her onto a regular bottle in which she has to suck with. I was hoping that once she got the suction thing down, then we could try breast feeding. It has been a month and a half since her surgery and I still have lots of questions as well. If I can help you in any way, please feel free to ask. Good luck.
