can I breastfeed after 4 months ?

Postby jlreale@erols.com » Thu Mar 18, 1999 6:12 pm

I have been pumping for my son since he was born He has cleft
palate, soft only. Is he too old to learn to take from the
breast? Has anyone else done this? I am a homeschooling mother of
4 and it takes up so much of my time to pump and then use the
Haberman. He was born October 1998. Thank you!

My daughter Jamie was born on 10/03/98! I too tried to
breastfeed without results. Jamie was put on the Habermann in the
hospital and I pumped and pumped. Unfortunately, pumping didn't
give me the stimulation I needed to keep up my supply and it
slowly dwindled. I don't know about establishing breastfeeding
after so long, but I know that we failed at it after just one
month. My advice, keep trying. Start her out with a bottle, but
go to the breast after just a couple of ounces. Your little one
should be hungry enough to try the breast, but not starving as to
get too frustrated. Try it with every feeding. With luck and
perserverance, you both may be successful. Good luck! If you
would like to chat one on one, e-mail me any time.
