My daughter had her palate repair done at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto in September; she was 13 months old. A few days after her surgery a small fistula formed and our surgeon said that it would not close on it's own. He said that she will need a second surgery to close it but that her speech should not be a problem. We are now 5 months post surgery and she is still only saying M's and A's with the occasional N. We have been in speech therapy for several months but there does not seem to be much progress. I guess what I need to know is how long did it take for your children to make additional sounds after surgery. Originally, our surgeon said he will do the surgery after she starts speaking to see if she has a 'nasal' quality in which case he will fix that at the same time. I just don't feel like the speaking will happen before the next surgery and I'm wondering if we should push to do the repair sooner.
Any comments or suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

| My daughter had palate surgery last August when she was 12 months old. About 2 months after the surgery she started to have B and D sound. Right now I am working on her L sound. |
