I have noticed a very large number of cleft lips and palates among the Huichol Indians of Nayarit, Mexico. It is a small tribe of indigenous peoples who often intermarry. It appears that up to 10% of liveborn children have cleft lips and palates within some communities, giving a pretty strong case the genetic etiology of the disease.

Your observation is very interesting about the Huichol Indians. Intermarriage will certainly increase the risk for cleft lip and palate in addition to other genetic traits. It reminds me of an article that I read that in one region of the Philippines, people who have a cleft lip and palate are commonplace. In many cases they have a bilateral cleft lip and palate.
